| The evening was full of entertainment, and education. Actress Marcia Wallace (Receptionist Carol from "The Bob Newhart Show") was the Mistress of ceremonies. Marcia, a breast cancer survivor, was also the recipient of last year's award. She did a great job hosting the event, introducing speakers such as Florence's children, City of Hope VIPs, and former patients of the City of Hope. Some VIPs who could not attend, such as Governor Pete Wilson and Elizabeth Dole, sent congratulatory letters. There was also a silent auction to raise additional money for the City of Hope. Florence contributed her new cookbook and some other assorted memorabilia to the auction. The audience was treated to a video retrospective of Florence's life and career, and also a poignant video about the wonderful efforts of the City of Hope. | ![]() |

Susan Olsen was in attendance with her family, to see her TV mom receive this prestigious award. Florence gave a warm and personal acceptance speech when she was presented with the beautiful "Spirit of Life" statue. She dedicated the evening to her former assistant Chris Vick, who was treated at the City of Hope but ultimately lost her battle with cancer. All in all, it was a very special evening for everyone. |
